In the small world inside my mind as a child, there was no one like Dolly Parton. No one simultaneously had the striking look and catchy country lick at the end of every word she sung. She spoke about love and country life, both of which I knew nothing about but she made it accessible to me. She was the gateway. Dixie Chicks followed, then Glen Campbell. I was singing about Ford pick-ups in my head, while sitting on the Hammersmith line. If the world of ‘Country’ was suddenly born in my mind, Dolly was the Mother.
